Faro, ancient capital
Political and administrative capital of the Algarve, Faro has become a prosperous city since its foundation due to its geographical position, its safe port, and the exploration and trade of salt and agricultural products from the inland Algarve, an important port during the Portuguese discoveries.
With a strong Christian influence and a remarkable history of coexistence among different cultures, Faro was a Phoenician city at its founding in 700 BC, but also Roman and Visigothic, conquered by European Christians from the Muslims of North Africa in 1249. It also had a strong Jewish community that developed in Faro the first printed book in Portugal. With many craftsmen and artists living among affluent social classes, commercial ties between Jews and Christians were common in this city during the 14th century.
